Hexagram 38: Two forces face each other in opposition. Hexagram 38 describes situations of misunderstanding, conflict of values, or people who seem fundamentally opposed in their views and intentions.
Kui does not call for unity at all costs - it acknowledges that genuine differences exist and must be respected. Attempting to force harmony where real incompatibility exists creates false peace that collapses under pressure. The wisdom here is in finding small areas of agreement or complementarity even within larger disagreement. Extreme isolation from those who differ leads to stagnation. Opposition, when managed thoughtfully, generates the creative tension that produces growth.
A significant difference in values, goals, or emotional styles is creating friction. You and your partner - or a person you are close to - may be seeing the same situation from nearly opposite angles. Rather than insisting on being right, look for the valid kernel in their perspective. Some differences enrich a relationship; others are genuinely incompatible over the long term. This hexagram asks you to look clearly at which type of difference you are dealing with and respond accordingly.
Disagreement with a colleague, client, or organization may feel like an impasse. Different approaches, priorities, or methods are colliding. Avoid escalating the conflict by meeting opposition with opposition - that produces a deadlock. Instead, find the smallest common ground and build from there. Sometimes apparent opposition is simply a misalignment in communication that can be resolved with patience and curiosity. Other times, the differences are structural and require acceptance rather than resolution.
When you encounter someone who seems entirely opposed to you, resist the reflex to dismiss or defeat them. Ask what need or value their position represents. Even the person who seems like an adversary carries information about what the situation requires. This hexagram cultivates the mature wisdom of holding tension without needing to resolve it immediately. Small steps forward - one point of connection, one honest exchange - are more valuable now than dramatic confrontations.
Find the one point where you genuinely agree and build outward from there. Differences do not need to be eliminated to be workable.
